What Is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

SIL is an NDIS funding category that pays for the support workers who help you manage your daily life things like personal care, cooking, cleaning, and getting to where you need to go. It’s usually set up for people living in shared accommodation, although it can apply in other living arrangements too. It’s worth knowing that SIL funding covers your support, not your rent or housing costs. Those are handled separately through Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) if you’re eligible, or through a private rental or other arrangement. If you’re not sure how that all fits together, don’t worry that’s exactly the kind of thing we help people sort out.

What Support Does My Core Support Provide Under SIL?

Is SIL the Right Fit for You?

SIL is generally for NDIS participants who need a significant amount of support with daily living and who are living or planning to live in a shared or supported accommodation setting. You’ll usually need SIL funding included in your NDIS plan, which involves an assessment of your support needs. If you’re not sure whether you qualify, or if your current plan doesn’t include SIL and you think it should, talk to us.
